I am in love with John Green. He is my literary hero.
Paper Towns and An Abundance of Katherines, hit me hard.
Looking for Alaska and The Fault In Our Stars answered my questions about life and death.
If I could make a wish, its to meet him, and get a chance to talk to him.

And yes, I also now have Let It Snow, I'm now in search for Will Grayson, Will Grayson.

An Abundance of Katherines

John Green, 2006

"That's what I was thinking about before you came. I was thinking about your mattering business. I feel like, how you matter is defined by the things hat matter to you. You matter as much as the things that matter to you do. And I got so backwards, trying to make myself matter to him. All this tome, there were real things to care about: real good people who care about me, and this place. It's so easy to get stuck. You just get caught in being something, being special or cool or whatever, to the point where you don't even know why you need it; you just think you do"

"And the moral of the story is that you don't remember what happened. What you remember becomes what happened. And the second moral of the story, if a story can have multiple morals, is that Dumpers are not inherently worse than Dumpees- breaking up isn't something that gets done to you; its something that happens with you."

"But there's another way. There are stories. Colin was looking at Lindsey, whose eyes were crinkling into a smile as Hassan loaned her nine cents so they could keep playing. Colin thought of Lindsey's storytelling lessons. The stories they'd told each other were so much a part of the how and why of his liking her. Okay. Loving. Four days in, and already, indisputably: loving. And he found himself thinking that maybe stories don't juts make us matter to each other- maybe they're also the only way to the infinite mattering he'd been after for so long. And Colin thought: Because like say I tell someone about my feral hog hunt. Even if it's a dumb story, telling it changes other people just the slightest bit, just as living the story changes me. An infinitesimal change. And that infinitesimal change ripples outwards- ever smaller but everlasting. I will get forgotten, but the stories will last. And so we all matter- maybe less than a lot but always more than none"

Wish I could travel to a parallel universe where I'm the only person and only my thoughts and endless row of good reads are with me.

Skimmed through my sent emails and  I realized one thing,

What I wanted a year ago is still the same thing I want right now which was also what I wanted even before graduating college.

Finally, its getting clearer now, this IS what I want.

I'm praying hard for this one, another shot, one more time.

Oh, may the odds be in my favor, this time around.

Monday, July 30, 2012

I'm currently reading Like The Flowing River by Paulo Coelho and I just thought of sharing this piece of anecdote.

Lord protect our doubts, because Doubts is a way of praying. It is Doubt that makes us grow because it forces us to look fearlessly at the many answers that exist to one question. And in order for this to be possible...Lord, protect our decisions, because making Decisions is a way of praying. Give us the courage, after our doubts, to be able to choose between one road and another. May our YES always be a YES and our NO always a NO. Once we have chosen our road may we never look back nor allow our soul to be eaten away by remorse. And in order for this to be possible...Lord, protect our actions, because Action is a way of praying. May our daily bread be the result of the very best that we carry within us. May we, through work and action, share a little of the love we receive. And in order for this to be possible...Lord, protect our dreams, because to Dream is a way pf praying. Make sure that, regardless of our age of our circumstances, we are capable of keeping alight in our heart the sacred flame of hope and perseverance. And in order for this to be possible...Lord, give us enthusiasm, because Enthusiasm is a way of praying. It is what binds us to the Heaven and to Earth, to grown-ups, and to children; it is what tells us that our desires are important and deserve our best efforts. It is Enthusiasm that reaffirms to us that everything is possible, as long as we are totally committed to what we are doing. And in order for this to be possible...Lord, protect us, because Life is the only way we have making manifest Your miracle. May the earth continue to transform seeds into wheat, may we continue to transmute wheat into bread. And this is only possible if we have Love; therefore, do not leave is in solitude. Always give us Your company, and the company of men and women who have doubts, who act and dream and feel enthusiasm and who live each day as if it were totally dedicated to Your glory. Amen.

I was the kid that never dreamt because I was made to believe that I don't deserve a big dream. Until today, its a struggle for me to dream.

Monday, July 23, 2012

Its frustrating not to have anyone to share all of these things I'm feeling. That one other person I could just say things to and just be able to bare all of me. Its during times like these that I wished I had a best friend.

9 Years and A Month

With my beloved YFC MTQ
If there was one thing about this chapter meeting that assured me it would be these:

1. Service to God doesn't end in YFC
2. I am leaving my YFC Family to a set of great people whose hearts and passion are to serve Him
So today, I officially said goodbye to YFC-MTQ. I didn't realize how hard it would be to actually say that it would be the last meeting that I'd be in as their chapter head. I've longed prepared for this and when I was about to do it words don't wanna escape my mouth.

I've been in the community for 9 years and most of my days if not spent in school and/ or with my family, it is with my YFC family. They have been my comfort zone, they're the people that the moment I see them, every ounce of problem goes away. It is in these people that I see how much God loves me and how great God really is.

For the past 9 years, God has continually shown me His greatness through my YFC family. Most of my values are centered in what I have gained in my journey as a YFC. I am not the person I am today if not for the people that I served with.

YFC was my life and tonight, just like that, I am walking away from it only bringing with me life lessons and memories with the best set of people God could have blessed me with.

Today, is the beginning and an end. An end to a wonderful journey in serving God and at the same time, today marks the start of my next mission, what this is, not exactly sure, but I'm keeping my faith awaiting for what comes next.

"To YFC-Central A3, I wouldn't not have grown to be the person I am today without you. To every single person I was privileged to serve with, THANK YOU. You guys don't know how much you've touched and moved me. And lastly to YFC- MTQ, great things are coming, prepare your hearts for God's never ending greatness."

Much much love
Mela.

Rising Higher v.02

When I started the previous post, I didn't realize it could end up as sort of a book review. I was originally planning to quote some of what Kelly had written, so anyway, I'm on to Part 2 of my Rising Higher Post, the one with the quotes.

The act of someone trusting my abilities helped me to see more in myself than the problems anger and bitterness.
I cannot allow anyone to dictate whether or not I achieve any degree of significance in this world or give anyone the power to discourage me from what I may want to accomplish in this life.
Nothing worthwhile comes without some degree of sacrifice and honest work
It was no longer about trying to act like things were fine when my life was actually in shambles
One thing I learned was that men and women could have fun together without compromising morals when the right boundaries are in place
- Rising Higher, Kelly Williams, 2012
and there are so much more, I was just into the book that I pretty much forgot to jot down his words. Whoops!

So if you want more insights on life, then what are you waiting for, head down to the nearest FullyBooked store (and lets hope they already carry the book) and get yourself one! :)

Rising Higher

June 28 2012, was the launch of "Rising Higher" the book written by Kelly Williams. My friends and I made sure that we won't miss the launch and I made sure to grab a copy of the book and took the chance to have Kelly sign my copy as well. (insert fan girl smile here!)

I've long anticipated reading this book. I've always looked up to Kelly, more than his basketball skills, I am in awe of his faith. Hearing him speak during one of the victory parties of Talk N Text made me admire him even more. It could actually be said that I am almost always in tears whenever I hear/ read anything related to him, be it an interview or his own blog. There is just something in the way he phrases his words that moves me. So hearing about his book on his life made me all the more excited. I am not a fan of auto/biography books, but there are always exceptions right?

Some pictures from the launch! :)

To my excitement I actually was able to finish this book in one sitting or well maybe two. You see I'm not exactly a fast reader but his book is so engaging and in written in such a conversational manner that you'll really have a hard time putting the book down. You wouldn't want to miss a thing on how he managed to get through one situation after the other. I laughed, cringed and cried while reading it! His story is powerful and moving. While reading it he'll let you in his life when the lights are turned off, in his plain clothes. How he's coping up with having to deal with ITP for 3 years now as well as his 30-year life-journey, with all its his highs and lows, his "almost there" moments and eventually making it. He maybe one of the highest paid basketball players in the country but his story is unlike no other. Above all his story is centered on his faith, he shared how accepting Jesus changed his life.

If you're in need of some light in your life, a moment to see things in perspective, to stop for awhile and dig deeper, a moment to realize how blessed you are, how much loved you are and a moment when you can jump start your life to live with greater purpose then spare some time and pick Rising Higher.

Its not your typical autobiography book nor a sports book, but Rising Higher is all about life and how you juggle up all the rocks thrown at you.

Ultimately its about honoring God and Rising Higher.

06052012

Despite being sick and sleepy all day, today just went great. :) It was better than expected.:)

I wasn't really prepared for the shoot. Getting sick Sunday night and not having any pullouts didn't really help either. Thank God, I was able to make use with the clothes I have here at home. Also, I would like to give special thanks to Gie, Lauren, Edrick for helping me out! I have such supportive classmates too! :) I swear, I would probably just mope in the corner and cry and won't have a decent layout if it wasn't for them! And have I mentioned that for this shoot, we got to work with Samantha Gomez. Really, we're merely amateurs, students, learning the ropes of styling and yet we already got this chance to work with her. :) God must really love me. And yes, I'm kilig. :)

Layout 1 :)
Layout 2:)

These are just pictures from my camera. Sayang, hindi nakita mashado the details.

And of course, we couldn't let this day pass without having our group and fangirl-ing pictures with her! I swear, she's such a sweetheart! :) And she's super easy to work with!!! Aaaaaaa. If only I could work with her again. :D

(L-R) Nissy, Ivond, Sam, Edrick, Gie, Sam, Me, Sylver. Lauren! We're missing you here!

With Sam!!! :) Don't be fooled, I was actually wearing 6-inch heels here.

[Somehow] Living A Dream

I've always dreamed of being a model. Sadly, I'm not gifted with height, but every now and then I still get to do it. :)

June 2003 to now.
YFC gave way to living my dream as a model, even just for a short period.
Just one of the things I am thankful for in the community. :)

Pictures from the recent camp. Thanks to whoever was holding Marie's camera. :)

There are things beyond our control. A point in our lives where people had to leave for them to grow. That exact moment where you've held on their strings for so long, took care of them and guided them, and you just have to let loose for them to fly on their own.

A part of you is sad because you have to let go but at the same time you're happy for them that finally the world can see what you have seen for so long.

At this point I have no other recourse but to detach myself to avoid hurting myself any further.

Why have I not gotten used to this?

"Let's stand under a tree," she said
"Why?"
"Because its nicer"
"Maybe you should sit on a chair, and I'll stand above you, like they always do with husbands and wives"
"That's stupid"
"Why's it stupid?"
"Because we're not married"
"Should we hold hand"
"We can't"
"But why?"
"Because people will know"
"Know what?"
"About us"
"So what if they know?"
"Its better when it's a secret"
"Why?"
"So no one can take it from us."

- The History of Love, Nicole Krauss
"Sometimes I thought about nothing and sometimes I thought about my life. At least I made a living. What kind of living? A living. I lived. Its wasn't easy. And yet. I found out how little is unbearable."

The thing about wanting to do so many things is that you don't get to extend yourself in the way when you're just focused on one thing. Its important to that we get a hold of what we really want in life and from their work our way up, towards our dreams. Focus on the one thing important to you. Make yourself the best at it and if in the end, you still want to do more, there will always be another opportunity that would help us grow and widen our world even more.

My Lenten Reflection

Lent and Holy week just ended and I can not think of any other time to write this blog but now, while its still 'in' despite me being a day late.

Lent is suppose to make one check on his relationship with God. We make the lenten sacrifice to experience what Jesus had to go through in His 40 days in the desert. He was tempted but he didn't fold. The last part of Lent is the Holy Week, the preparation for the death of Jesus.

Nowadays, some people may have lost the real meaning of this all. I am not judging, for whatever way you want to spend this week, its all up to you, but really may we not lose sight of the REAL meaning and importance of this all.

I personally, would say that I wasn't able to accomplish my 40-day sacrifice. I planned on giving up fast food and shopping. You maybe wondering why I planned on giving up the latter one, no its not because I wanted to save but more so because, I am such an impulsive buyer. I swear, I have to always be buying something. Me being a shopaholic is a part of who I am and for 40 days I planned on letting that side go with the conviction that if I could do this for 40 days, I could fight temptation and win any battle! Guess what, I was able to do it for 2 - 3 weeks but when I started seeing the books I've always wanted to read, it was too hard to resist. Yes. I was tempted and gave in to it and from that point on, I gave it up. I failed my test. No point of trying.

I would admit that I have felt dry the past couple of weeks, months even. Last week, I realized what I was missing, I wasn't who I am anymore, I was a puppet of everyone around me. I was the daughter, sibling, friend, chapter head that I was but I am not at any means, myself anymore. The world and its demands has taken its toll on me. I let life and other people dictate my actions instead of me controlling my own life. Its a long process in reaching back to who I really am deep down, its hard to re-assess my life especially with a ton of clutter around messing up with me. The passion in living has faded away, the passion in dreaming has died, I am but a walking skeleton, not anymore capable of living a life worthy of the death of Christ.

I've always prayed that God put me in a place where I can be a testimony of how great He truly is, for me to be a source of hope and pillar of strength for the people around me, but I seem stuck on where I am lost and confused. Apparently all of this is because I lost in touch with God. Last week, I had the chance to reconnect with God. Not that my relationship is back to how it used to be, but for me the fire is back in me, somewhere and somehow. I think this was because, I learned to appreciate the basics once again. The basics that we often over look, the main foundation of our faith.

Our lives consists of series of events that distracts us from noticing the smallest details. We are living in a 'loud' society wherein silence is uncomfortable. We have the tendency to forget that it is in the silence and peace that we get in touch with God and our inner self. I myself am too scared of that particular silence, scared of what God maybe telling me, of doubting myself if I am ever capable of the things that he asks me to do, so I resort to the one thing that I know most people do, I just 'hear' it. I hear things without really listening; I just say words without proclaiming them, I just do it instead of living it.

Its easy to say that I am a follower of God. I strive to live like Christ, it was a challenge I accepted months back, but seriously, living it is harder. Living this certain way asks so much from a person, it especially asks us to deviate from the social norms of the society. Who am I but a weakling too often tempted and too often lost. Temptation is everywhere, it comes in different forms and ways and we win some and lose some. Thats how life really is in the first place. I have been in my community for almost 9 years now and yet I still struggle. Everyday is still a battle, I am not who I envision myself to be, everyday is filled with certain obstacles that we all have to endure at the end of the day. Our life is challenged and we are tested, our faith is always tested and it is up to us to fight for our God. It seems easy to listen, to proclaim and to live our ideal life, the Christ-like way but truth be told, its hard and it takes a lot of patience and prayer. We listen not to the words but to the meaning of these words and how we can use it to better our lives. It is easy to say the word of God to share experiences and share our knowledge in faith but really, we should proclaim it, saying every bit of it with meaning, with emotion with passion. Knowing what you are really saying and to actually live it. Practice what you preach, one of the hardest things to do in this lifetime given all the distraction there is.

Jesus has died, for us to live our life. Yes, what we have now, is all because God loved us that He gave his only Son for us. All of this is rooted in love. The certain kind of love that we have to share to everyone around us. We are given hope that we could rise above our sins. Jesus gave up his life to give us ours and we should live it in the way that pleases God. To me, holy week is all about these three. To live our life full of love and hope.

During the Visita Iglesia, I have said this prayer "Lord, I am not worthy of your death. You are dead because of my sins. Help me to live a life that pleases you, worthy of this life you have given me" or something to that extent. I can't remember what exactly I said but gets, I think that the reason I lost the fire in me was simple, because I do not know how to pray anymore, I can't keep still and always too afraid to know what lies ahead. But really the power we have against anything that is thrown at us is prayer. It is in praying that we really become a better person, it is in prayer that we work hand-in-hand with God.

Holy Week reminded me the importance of prayer, silence, the stillness and trusting that God has a great plan ahead for me.
